Halloween fun

Morgan has been talking the last couple of months about how she wanted to dress up as Tigger for Halloween. She said that she wanted me to be Winnie the Pooh and her Daddy to be Eeyore. I did find a Tigger costume for her online, but I figured it would be too hot for her to wear. We usually have mild weather on Halloween. So, I didn't order the Tigger costume. I took Morgan to Wal*Mart and decided to let her peruse the Halloween aisles.

Morgan zeroed in on a "Go Go Girl" costume right away. She told me she wanted that costume. I was pleasantly surprised because we went through a period this summer where she decided she didn't like to wear dresses. In order to get her to wear a dress, we had to tell her that it was a "long shirt".

The costume she picked out had a 60's inspired psychedelic print dress. It had a white vinyl looking cap and shoe covers that looked like knee length boots.

Morgan talked about Halloween a lot in the last week. When it was time to get ready to go, Morgan told me, "I don't want to go trick-or-treating now". She didn't want to put her costume on either. I told her that we were going to go to McDonald's and was able to get her to put the dress on. I painted a heart on one cheek and a flower on the other.

We stopped by my Mother-In-Law's house on the way to McDonald's. Morgan's grandma had wanted her to come over there. My MIL wasn't planning on giving anything out to anyone else and she didn't have any candy at home. So, I gave her the stuff to give to Morgan.

When we got to her house, Morgan did not want to knock on the door.

You can see she is not looking happy.

But once she saw that she was getting her favorite treat (a Little Debbie cake), her face changed.

We left Grandma's, went to McDonald's drive-through, then headed to the mall.

Once we got to the mall, the first thing Morgan saw was another little girl with a costume on. I told her, "Look! That little girl is wearing her boots!" THEN Morgan wanted the rest of her costume on.

Of course, Morgan had to ride the car when she saw it.

She also just had to ride the escalator. Here she is with her Godmother, Susanne.

We walked all over the mall and got a lot of candy. Morgan really enjoyed looking at all of the kids and their costumes. But, a couple of the masks scared her. She kept her eye on the costumes that scared her, and held my hand tighter. I would tell her that it was a little boy wearing that silly mask. She nodded like she understood, but she still didn't like it.

She was quiet when she said "trick or treat" and "thank you". I could barely hear her.

We left the mall and headed over to her best friend, Andrew's house. Morgan and Andrew just love each other! He is a year older than her, but they are about the same height.

Andrew led Morgan inside and we stayed for a couple of hours.

Andrew was dressed as a scarecrow.

Then her changed into another costume.

There were hugs and kisses goodbye and then we headed home.
Morgan's Daddy was working overtime, so he didn't go out with us. We rode with Morgan's godparents.

A day out with Mommy

I can't wait until Christmas time because Morgan has outgrown the majority of her toys (developmentally). I may give in and get a few things before Christmas to keep her occupied. Her Daddy told me that we wouldn't get her much for Christmas because she has so much now. I told him I was going to be giving a lot away because they were for younger children.

The good thing is that she is using her imagination a lot, finding new ways to play with old toys. But, the other night she said to me, "Mommy, I need something to do."

Today I decided to surprise her. I told her that I was taking her to McDonalds, but didn't tell her that I had other plans. She was happy just to go there.

We went to McDonalds and she got her chicken nuggets and "hot fries". She always calls french fries that. I guess it started when I would tell her that her fries were hot and she had to be careful.

We had a nice time at McDonalds. There were quite a few kids there that she was interacting with. Then, I drove her to a playground. We had the playground to ourselves and she had a blast.

She liked climbing the big slide backwards and sliding down on her stomach! I thought she was going to wind up with a red belly, but she didn't.

We stayed at the playground until about an hour before dark.

She even swung on the big kids swings. I tried to teach her how to use her body to move the swing by herself, but she told me that it was too hard and she couldn't do it. She'll be swinging on her own soon enough.

We had a really nice day. I even played on the slides and the swings. But the big slide had a bump in it that hurt my rear going down!
When we got home, Morgan looked over at her swingset and said, "Mommy, I have a playground in my yard. But, I have a little slide". I said, "Yes, you DO have a playground!" I think it was more fun to go somewhere new. I know I had fun! Besides, I am too big to go down our slide.

Pumpkin Patch

Last year, we took Morgan to the Chesterfield Berry Farm to go to the pumpkin patch there. They had all kinds of activities, including hay rides, and we had a blast. So, I looked forward to taking Morgan again this year. It was a rainy day, but it was clearing up, so we headed out the door.

The berry farm is 40 miles from our house. When we finally arrived, it was closed due to the rain that day! I was so disappointed. It was the only chance that the three of us would get to go there toegther before Halloween.

On the way home, we stopped by a Ukrops store and picked up two pumpkins there.

I carved one of the pumpkins with a black cat on the front. I haven't carved the second one yet.

Morgan is going to go trick-or-treating for the first time this year. She picked out her outfit at Wal*Mart. I won't spoil the surprise, but she picked out an outfit I never thought she would pick. She even tried on scary masks at the store. Last year they would have scared her.
She is looking forward to going out this year. We've even practiced trick-or-treating at home. Morgan knocked on the door, I opened it, she held out her bucket and said, "Trick or treating!" That was funny! We've been telling her she was going trick or treating, so that is what she thought she was supposed to say. She finally got it right.

What a ham!

Tonight Morgan was playing on her tricycle. She told me to take pictures of her as she posed. She got on her tricycle every way possible except the correct way. Each time she got into a position, she would say, "Is this the right way?" I'd tell her,"No, that's not how you ride it!" She'd laugh, tell me to take a picture and would get into another position. This is the first time she has posed for pictures like this. I got a kick out of it. I took about 20 pictures, but you get the idea with these:

Timbuktu

Morgan and I went to my best friend's (Sandy) house for our monthly luncheon. This month's luncheon consisted of foods from Timbuktu, which is in west Africa.

Instead of serving each course individually, we had a family style lunch with all of the food on the table. We had so many dishes, it would have taken quite a while to serve it any other way.

Here was the menu:
Yam Foo Foo - This was made by Paula. It was mashed yams that were seasoned with salt, pepper, butter, and sugar. I love yams and this was a nice dish.

There was a Rice bread made by Debi. This bread can be used as a coffee cake or a bread since it is not very sweet. It stays moist for a week. It consisted of cream of Rice, mashed bananas, sugar, nutmeg, salt, baking soda, water, and oil. I think I was the only one who ate this bread. I think most people had a problem with the consistency. It kind of reminded me of a firm flan texture. I thought it was okay, but I wouldn't make it.

I made an African coal-oven shortbread. I really liked this bread because it was very easy to make. The consistency was kind of like a firm cornbread. It was made with flour, margarine, eggs, sugar, and milk.

Sandy made a Mango jam to go with the bread. She also made a spiced butter. The butter consisted of turmeric, cardamom, fenugreek, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, butter, garlic, onions, and ginger. Unfortunately, after all of the work (and ingredients) she put into the butter, no one liked it. I thought it tasted like a chicken stock base instead of butter.

We also had honey yeast bread and cornbread that Sandy made. They were delicious! Sandy redeemed herself! LOL! I will keep both of these recipes.

I made Chicken Yassa.

This is one of Africa's most famous dishes and was a favorite of several of us at the lunch. The fowl in Africa is usually tough. So, the chicken is marinated overnight in lots of onions, lemon juice, cider vinegar, bay leaf, garlic, Dijon mustard, and a sauce (I used a chicken bouillion).

After marinating, I baked the chicken, then put it under the broiler to get the skin browned. The onions were removed from the marinade and sauteed until carmelized. Then the marinade was added to the onions and cooked some, the chicken was then added back to the pan.

Cheryl made a West African black bean and sweet potato burrito. The filling included onions, garlic, peanut butter, sweet potatoes, black beans, cumin, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper. The burritos were pretty good.

Sandy made African goat stew that was eaten wrapped in a flat bread (that she also made). I knew that the stew was made with goat meat, but waited until everyone else had tried the stew (and said they liked it) before I said to Sandy, "Isn't this the goat stew?" I think our group knows to expect anything, so no one seemed bothered that it was goat meat. The stew was good and so was the meat. It was very tender and not stringy liked Sandy had heard the meat can be.

Sandy also made the greens with smoked bacon which was very good.

Cheryl made a West African fried slaw that was delicious. It had cabbage, green onions, carrots, sweet potatoes, yellow corn, white corn, honey, cider vinegar, toasted coconut, peanuts, hot pepper sauce, and salt and pepper in the dish.

Sandy made Jolluf rice which everyone liked. The rice had meat (I don't remember what kind), yellow onions, green peppers, ginger, tomatoes, tomato paste, salt, pepper, thyme, and crushed red pepper in it.

Whew! I'm not done yet!

I made baked sweet plantains. I took a bite and didn't like them. The plantains were cooked with white wine, sherry, brown sugar, butter, cinnamon, and nutmeg. I guess plantains are an acquired taste. I think half of us liked them.

Sharon made a Monrovian coconut pie. The pie was not like a custard pie. The filling was primarily coconut and it soaked up the butter, sugar, eggs, milk, and vanilla that was also in the filling. The pie was very good and I think everyone liked it.

Sandy made a passion fruit Bavarian cream that was a gelatin dessert. It was delicious. She also made a peanut butter candy, even though she doesn't like peanut butter! Sandy also made Benne cakes which is a cookie made with sesame seeds. I liked the cookies as well.

I think that was all of the food. We certainly had a lot of dishes to try. Sandy also made an iced mint tea and White Elephant drinks.

Entertainment was provided by Morgan, who played the piano for us!

Next month, Cheryl will be hosting us as we eat foods from Poland.

Morgan and I had a lot of fun at the lunch. We were the last ones to leave!

Picnic in the yard

Today's weather was quite lovely. It was in the 60's and sunny. Morgan wanted to play outside and she insisted on wearing her new sunglasses. She has had sunglasses for a while now that she never wears. But, this time, she picked out her own sunglasses in the store and she wanted to wear them.

Morgan asked me if we could have a picnic and I told her that we could. Morgan wanted to eat bacon and tater tots. I made that for her and made some other food for myself.
I got a blanket and spread it under one of our pear trees. Then I brought our food out on plates. Morgan asked, "Where's the picnic basket?" I told her that we didn't have a picnic basket. She had seen picnic baskets on her favorite show "Caillou". But, she was fine with the fact that we didn't have one. We settled down onto the blanket and had a nice little picnic.

Dee Dee was on the porch, staring at our food. It looks like her eyes are closed in the picture, but I swear she was begging!

Morgan went over to feed Dee Dee a few tater tots (which made Dee Dee very happy).

It's nice that Morgan is at the age where a simple picnic is fun entertainment for her. I know these days won't last long!
